Obasogie, who was part of Nigeria’s squad that finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, has been handed a three-month suspension pending investigation. The club announced the decision in a public statement issued on 27 February 2026.

The goalkeeper featured for Singida Black Stars in a 1–1 league draw against Namungo just a day before the suspension was confirmed.

In the official notice, the club stated:

The management of Singida Black Stars SC, through its Disciplinary Committee, has taken disciplinary action against players Khalid Aucho and Amas Obasogie as follows:

1. Khalid Aucho: Has been sanctioned for indiscipline and absenteeism from work and has therefore been suspended from duty for three months.

2. Amas Obasogie: Has been suspended from duty for three months pending investigation into allegations of match-fixing.”

The club reminds all its players and staff to adhere to discipline, accountability, and respect for the club.

Club statement

The club did not provide further details about the specific match or nature of the allegations against Obasogie. As of the time of filing this report, neither the player nor his representatives had publicly responded to the suspension.

Obasogie has been part of the Super Eagles set-up for the past three years and has served mainly as a backup option in Nigeria’s goalkeeping department. His inclusion in recent national team camps had signalled growing trust from the technical crew.

Another betting cloud

Obasogie’s case comes just after the dust settled over another Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, who was linked to a betting-related investigation in Europe.

In 2023, Okoye, who plays for Udinese Calcio, was named in an Italian betting probe over suspicious wagers placed on a yellow card he received during a Serie A match. Italian authorities opened an investigation after unusual betting patterns were flagged by monitoring agencies.

Although Okoye denied wrongdoing, the matter led to disciplinary scrutiny and a temporary suspension while investigations were ongoing.

Okoye, along with three friends, were placed under investigation. In the end, the 26-year-old, who has won 18 senior caps for Nigeria, escaped serious punishment and was handed only a two-month ban, which ended in October 2025.

Cases involving betting and alleged match manipulation are treated seriously under both FIFA and continental regulations. Football’s governing bodies operate strict integrity frameworks that allow for provisional suspensions while investigations are conducted. Sanctions, if proven, can range from fines and bans to lengthy suspensions from all football-related activities.

Integrity concerns

Match-fixing allegations remain one of the most sensitive issues in global football. FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have repeatedly warned players and officials about the risks associated with illegal betting networks and manipulation of match outcomes.

For Obasogie, the coming weeks will be crucial. The Tanzanian club has made it clear that the suspension is pending investigation, meaning no guilt has been established at this stage.
